Empowering Captains with Real-Time Vessel Insights

EV Maritime is a New Zealand company leading the shift to high-speed, zero-emissions ferries. Working with Auckland Transport and other global operators, they design vessels that are fast, efficient, and sustainable. To help captains run these ferries safely and efficiently, EV Maritime asked us to create the Deputy Dashboard—a real-time operational display for the vessel bridge.

Challenge

Captains need quick, clear access to information like vessel range, speed, charging times, and schedule progress. The system had to display live data from EV Maritime’s back-end API in a way that was easy to understand at a glance, day or night, even in bright sunlight or rough weather.

Solution

We designed the UI/UX and built the kiosk-style desktop application optimised for a 1980×1080 bridge-mounted display. The dashboard has two main screens:

  • Steaming screen – Shows live vessel stats: speed, motor RPM, range, efficiency, and state of charge (SOC). A progress bar compares actual vs. planned performance, and predictive readouts show estimated arrival times and SOC at key points. Passenger logging is quick and touch-friendly to meet legal requirements.

  • Schedule screen – Displays daily routes, charging slots, and other tasks. Captains can make quick changes, upload schedules via USB, and view SOC projections in table or graph form. A “Fill Charge Slots” button automatically sets the best charging times.

We included a day/night mode toggle, clear icons for different task types, and monospaced fonts for stable, easy-to-read numbers—all styled to match EV Maritime’s brand.

Result

The Deputy Dashboard gives captains exactly what they need to keep trips on schedule, conserve energy, and run the ferries safely. By making complex data simple, it supports EV Maritime’s mission to prove that electric ferries can meet the demands of busy harbour cities—without emissions.
